Below are some of hiking trails in Washington State, USA, that I have been to.
Mount Baker Highway
Mount Baker Highway starts from Bellingham WA, winding for 59 miles (95 km), and ending at the foot of Mount Baker at Artists Point. There are several trails starting at Artist Point. You can see Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan up close at Artist Point without hiking.
Hiking Mazama Dome
Length: 7.6 km
Elevation Gain: 528 m
Difficulty Level: Intermediate
The trailhead to Mazama Dome starts at the Mount Baker Ski Area. Parking can be a nightmare if you go during a winter weekend, so arrive early if you want to secure a spot.
From the numbers above, the trail might not seem too difficult. However, keep in mind that the first half involves walking across several frozen lakes during the winter. Most of the elevation gain occurs in the second half of the trail, which includes a few steep sections. Fortunately, these steep spots are short. You may need to take off your snowshoes and use kick-steps to ascend those areas. Be extra cautious when descending with snowshoes as well.
The final steep section is the ascent to the col between Mazama Dome and Mount Herman. After that, the trail becomes a mellow and steady climb to Mazama Dome. The views from the top are stunning. On a clear day, you can see all the iconic landmark mountains, including Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan, Table Mountain, and more.
Once you’ve finished soaking in the views, simply retrace your steps back to the parking lot.
